Five-factor personality dimensions and their associations with early maladaptive schemas in individuals with major depressive disorder

Introduction Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the third leading cause of disease burden, accounting for 4.3% global burden disease. Personality traits, as described in Five-Factor Model, are consistently associated with individual’s well-being and mental health. Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMS) self-perpetuating dysfunctional cognitive structures that have been linked psychological health play a significant role developing maintaining distress. Both personality traits EMS extensively studied contributors to MDD symptoms. Objectives To our knowledge, very few studies attempted link clinical samples. The present study aimed investigate association between Model sample patients Crete, Greece. Methods Two hundred two diagnosis (81.7% females, aged 47.75±14.06 years) participated study. Traits Questionnaire was used measure terms neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, conscientiousness dimensions. Young Schema Questionnaire-Short Form 3 (YSQ-SF 3) evaluate 18 which grouped five domains: disconnection rejection, impaired autonomy performance, limits, other-directedness, overvigilance inhibition. Results Significant associations were found. Specifically, higher level all domains found scoring neuroticism lower agreeableness (apart from other-directedness non-significant). Openness negatively related other-directedness. Conclusions Although causal inferences cannot be made due cross-sectional design study, findings accordance Therapy affirms relationship innate temperament EMS.
